Unifi Kenya is a subsidiary of Unifi Africa and is recruiting a Finance Operations role to build, enhance, and sustain a high-performing financial environment that supports both the Finance function and the broader business. The ideal candidate will spearhead Unifi Kenya’s financial operations, be analytically adept, and have passion for African business. A healthy spirit of adventure and sense of humour would be helpful.
Purpose of the role
The main purpose of the role is ensuring the complex accounting needs for the business are completed with precision. The duties include assuming a leadership role to guide accounting personnel in daily tasks, maintaining the Chart of Accounts, ensuring accuracy and completeness of the General Ledger (Trial Balance) of the company as well as the preparation of Balance Sheet reconciliations, Management Accounts and analysis for review.

The role will require management of accounting staff as the company grows.

The duties include assuming a leadership role to guide accounting personnel in daily tasks, maintaining the Chart of Accounts, ensuring accuracy and completeness of the General Ledger (Trial Balance) of the company as well as the preparation of Balance Sheet reconciliations, Management Accounts and analysis for review.

Responsibilities
- Maintain Chart of Accounts (Xero- soon Netsuite and Unibos) in line with group guidelines.
- Ensure Trial Balance recording in line with IFRS, all accounting standards as well as any legislated requirements.
- Ensure approval of journals and segregation of duties.
- Ensure accurate and timely capture of all financial transactions and ensuring all relevant supporting documentation is uploaded.
- Review all balance sheet accounts monthly ensuring fully reconciled and accurate, and ensuring reporting (in conjunction with Finance Operations Controller and FM) is done accurately and in line with group deadlines.
- Ensure Control Accounts fully tie up with sub-ledgers.
- Perform analytical reviews and maintain accrual accounts and ensure avoidance of duplicate processing of transactions.
- Ensure outstanding reconciling items are corrected and cleared within 30 days of preparation of the reconciliations and develop and maintain reporting on the reconciling items.
- Ensure the Month-end Balance Sheet Recon files are prepared, reviewed and ready for further review on a timely basis, ensuring any supporting documentation is attached and reconciling items followed up and cleared, with exception reporting where applicable.
- Ensure the Balance Sheet Recon Checklist is maintained, distributed, fully signed off and filed (electronically) monthly.
- Escalate any risks identified through Balance Sheet review formally and in a timely fashion to the FM.
- Ensure compliance with internal policies and guidelines and ensure clear Internal Audit reports regarding the General Ledger and its related processes.
- Liaise with External Auditors and ensure timely and accurate submission of all required information, documentation and analysis.
- Ensure analytical review of P&L to ensure accurate allocations, accruals and disclosures.
- Ensure maintenance of Departments/Cost Centres and Branches in the Accounting Package as well as the Loan Management System.
- Further ensure that all P&L transactions are accurately assigned to branches/cost centres/departments as required.
- Maintenance of Fixed Assets register ensuring tagging and location control
- Ensuring accurate and complete onboarding, disposal and transfer/movement of fixed assets
- Check reconciliation of FA register to GL, check Depreciation journals for accuracy and completeness.
- Ensure monthly tax returns are completed accurately, in a timely fashion and timely payments to KRA. This includes making of CBK returns.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in finance, Accounting, Economics, Business Administration, or a related field.
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA), ACCA, CIMA or equivalent professional accounting qualification is essential
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a similar finance role, ideally within a high-growth or dynamic business environment
- Strong analytical and numerical skills with the ability to distil complex financial data into clear insights that inform strategic decision-making
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, identify challenges, and proactively develop effective, innovative solutions
- Proven experience in negotiating terms and managing relationships with banks, suppliers, and other key stakeholders
- Excellent communication and leadership abilities with the confidence and adaptability to engage effectively at all levels of the organization
- Strong interpersonal skills with a collaborative mindset and the ability to foster productive internal and external partnerships
- High attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to manage large volumes of information in a fast-paced, evolving environment
